Resumen: There has been a revolution in the provision for the arts in Britain since 1965 and a key factor in that revolution can be summed up in two words 'Arts Centres'. This study, the first independent exploration of arts centres throughout the UK, indentified 242 arts centres functioning in March 1986. A thorough examination has been made of their organisation and activities within the framework of a new taxonomy of six types of arts centre: professional urban, voluntary urban, community, rural, centres for young people, and centres based in schools, colleges and universities. Using questionnaires, interviews, detailed case studies, the research study provides details of the funding, organisation and activities of arts centres. From their findings, the authors make recommendations about the management of arts centres in the cultural life of the country. (Font: Editor)
